Marty Mackay Memorial Cycle
13th April 2024
The 2016 Marty Mackay Memorial Sponsored Cycle and Walk held last April raised £15,408.00 for Cancer Charities and good causes in the North. This brings the total raised since the event began in 2011 to a staggering £108,242.00.

The response from all the participants was, as usual, truly amazing, with people from all over the Highlands cycling, walking, trekking, and running. There was a raffle and an auction with an incredible display of items, including malt whiskies and tickets for a Manchester City match. A huge ‘Thank You’ goes to everyone behind the scenes – the people running the bar and serving food in the hall, the back-up crew following the participants, the RBS Van for providing refreshments and a facility for registration, those preparing the food, those providing bacon rolls at Lairg and refreshments en-route, and the many people who donated prizes, refreshments, and food - without them the event couldn’t happen.

Beneficiaries this year are:- Raigmore Oncology Unit; Raigmore NW Patient’s Fund; Marie Curie Cancer Care; Macmillan Cancer Relief; Highland Hospice; Cancer Research; Kinlochbervie High School; Malcolm Sergeant Click Fund; and Senior Citizen’s Christmas Parties in the North & West.

The date for the 2023 event is Saturday April 15th – the cycle from Lairg to Durness via Laxford, and the walk from Rhiconich to Durness. Participants of all ages and abilities are encouraged to take part and are welcome to undertake shorter routes if they prefer. Refreshments will be provided en-route and at the village hall. There will be the usual raffle and auction at around 6pm and entertainment to suit all tastes, with music from the Munro Family from Bettyhill in the early evening, followed by a licenced dance.

Marty’s family would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to its success. A special ‘Thank You’ to Kirsteen and Donald Morrison for their hard work and dedication.

We very much appreciate your support and look forward to welcoming you all again in April.
